Position on the 2017 Special Session

May 23, 2017:

Judy Williams of Santa Fe is the new president of LWVNM, elected at the League's State Convention in Santa Fe May 21, 2017. She has twice served as president of the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County, chaired the Santa Fe County Health Policy and Planning Commission, and served on the Santa Fe County Corrections Advisory Committee. She is currently on the Health Information System Act Advisory Committee of the NM Department of Health. Dr. Williams holds a Ph.D. from the Heller School at Brandeis University and a BA from Middlebury College in Vermont. Her career focused on health financing and care systems, health program evaluation and research, and policy analysis. She said, "the League will continue to work for an informed electorate, preserve and strengthen voting rights, and ensure a representative legislature."

Convention delegates also voted to approve three new studies for the League. First is a two-year study of the pros and cons of transferring ownership of federal public lands to the state; second is a study of nuclear waste storage issues, focused on spent nuclear fuel from commercial nuclear reactors; third is a one-year study and update on health care issues, including cost, access and transparency as they affect patients.
